NEW YORK, NY – Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) President Gerard Fitzgerald issued the following statement on the five-story apartment building fire in the Bronx that occurred on Thursday, December 28, 2017: “The deadly fire in the Bronx was a horrific tragedy. Firefighters feel bad any time a life is lost during an emergency, especially during the holiday season.

Responders were on the scene within minutes and 170 firefighters responded to the call. With the cold weather and wind making it feel like single digits, some firefighters were instructed by dispatchers to huddle with their crews to keep warm. Due to the quick response of the fire department, dozens of lives were saved which stopped the incident from becoming deadlier.

Unfortunately, there were 12 lives that were lost and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
