The fight continues. Municipal retirees, who were promised decades ago that they had the right to Medicare and Medigap upon retiring, have been pushed to switch to the far less advantageous for-profit Medicare Advantage plan. In a roller-coaster turn of events, the Adams administration has fought them tooth and nail, saying the switch would free up hundreds of million dollars for the city. Judicial rulings that the retirees received in their favor have still not halted the push. Now, City Council legislation that would preserve their health benefits has failed to find traction among City Council members. Marianne Pizzitola, president of the New York City Organization of Public Service Retirees, said, “we should not have to keep coming out here in the cold, in the rain, in the summer, every four seasons, to keep fighting to protect a federal public health benefit.”
