After a 148-day strike, the Writers Guild of America has a tentative new contract. Partly because of solidarity with SAG-AFTRA, who joined their entertainment-creator compatriots and also went on strike, one which they are still on, the Hollywood studios found themselves on the hot seat, under pressure to become serious about the union’s demands. The deal was reached on Sept. 24 with the Alliance of Motion Picture and TV Producers (AMPTP). Among other wins, the agreement calls for minimum TV writers room staffing, improved streaming residuals, and, importantly, a host of new rules regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for writing. “AI-generated material can’t be used to undermine a writer’s credit,” reads one line.
