Mayor Adams signed a one-time waiver to permit FDNY EMS members to take a promotional exam that was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. It applies to those workers who had aged out of the threshold application age, and who had not reached their 29th birthday by 12/31/19. Adams praised FDNY EMS workers, saying they had been on the front lines for a host of disastrous events, including 9/11, Hurricane Sandy, and COVID-19. FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said that many EMS workers may have had hopes of becoming a firefighter, and shouldn’t be denied that chance because of the COVID shutdown. “Thanks to this bill, that will no longer be the case,” she said.
