Hundreds of union laborers took a stand against the notorious non-union demolition firm Alba Services, and their employers Rockrose Development. Rockrose Development owns and manages properties in New York City and Washington, D.C. Alba’s demolition services include asbestos abatement, an extremely toxic substance that can cause a range of illnesses, some of them fatal. And yet the company, according to one worker, now a union organizer, said they did not provide the workers with proper safety protocols. Jose Carlos witnessed injured workers hurriedly whisked away, without any accident reports being filed. They also intimidated current and former workers who file workers’ comp claims, among many other abuses. Six union officials were arrested during the demonstration when they sat on the roadway in the Flatiron District, unfurling a banner saying, “Shame on Rockrose”.
