Over the years, many cultural institutions, especially museums around New York City, have clashed with management and demanded higher wages and better benefits. Now, at the Brooklyn Museum, famed for its progressive values and diversity in its exhibitions, has found itself in the middle of challenges very similar to its cultural colleagues. Cost-cutting moves proposed by management already in motion will require 50 employees, 19 members of Local 1502 of DC 37, and 21 members of UAW Local 2110, to be laid off, among others, while top executives, will have their pay trimmed, not an impressive feat, considering that the Museum’s executive director makes more than $1 million. Essentially the Museum has tried to move ahead with these layoffs in violation of the unions’ contracts.
