Voicing concern for how children, and students, will be affected by Mayor Adams’ plan to evict families from emergency shelters in New York City after 60 days, the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) is making a clear connection between that practice and how they fare in city schools. “New York City cannot toss children out on the street in the middle of winter,” said UFT President Michael Mulgrew. “Our asylum seekers have endured great trauma getting here. The city public schools have welcomed them. Educators have built trust with their new students, and have made schools a secure, consistent force in the children’s lives.” A petition has been launched, calling on Mayor Adams to abandon the policy.
