PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – The United Food and Commercial Workers union have announced a tentative agreement with Giant Eagle in Western Pennsylvania. The contract will cover over 5,600 employees.

UFCW Local 1776 posted the following statement: “We are happy to report that after months of contract negotiations, the UFCW Local 1776 KS Giant Eagle bargaining committee has reached a tentative agreement with Giant Eagle for a new 3-year union contract. The bargaining committee unanimously supports this tentative agreement and recommends it for member ratification. We are currently working on the details for a contract ratification meeting and will send meeting info to Giant Eagle members. We want to thank the Union bargaining team headed by Tony Helfer and all the members who spent many hours working for a satisfactory conclusion and look forward to seeing Giant Eagle members at the contract vote”

The settlement was a surprise to many since both sides filed multiple labor charges with the National Labor Relations Board. The two sides were at odds for years. The contract deal is also the first after the UFCW announced last fall a merger of Local 23, headquartered in Canonsburg, and Local 1776, based near Philadelphia The merger created  a statewide union.
