At the fitting location of the Fireman’s Memorial in Manhattan’s Riverside Park, twelve FDNY members were honored on Thursday, Oct. 12. All had died within the past year. The department holds these memorials annually. Two died on duty – one, EMS Captain Alison Russo, was murdered in a horrific attack in Sept. of 2022, near her station headquarters in Queens. Firefighter William P. Moon fell to his death inside his Brooklyn station house while preparing for a drill. In all, 1,159 FDNY members have died in the line of duty, of these, 343 succumbed to 9/11 related illnesses.
