ALBANY, NY – “Once again, the nation is shaken by the news of another horrific shooting, this time at a bar in Thousand Oaks hosting college students from multiple schools in the area. New Yorkers mourn for the victims of the shooting, including a Ventura County sheriff’s sergeant, and for their families. As the father of three, I know this is a parent’s worst nightmare, and the New York family also stands with them during this terrible time.

“Over a year after the shooting in Las Vegas, this tragedy is another painful reminder of the scourge of gun violence that continues to plague our society. These acts of senseless violence are occurring with frightening regularity, and yet Washington has resigned itself to doing nothing. Thoughts and prayers will not prevent another shooting—but action can. Two days ago, Americans made clear that they want a return to reasonable politics. We are resolved to do all we can to uphold that vision, and to make our streets safe as well.

“In New York, we are not waiting for the federal government to act. We already have the strongest gun safety laws in the nation, and in the upcoming legislative session we will take additional steps to make our laws even stronger to keep our communities safe.”
