New York, NY – Social Security is a lifeline for many Americans. Millions of seniors, veterans and people with disabilities rely on Social Security benefits for the majority of their income. The average annual benefit for those who depend on the program for the majority of their income is just $16,000. That amount barely covers the cost of housing, food and other basic needs.

Many Republicans and the wealthy want to reduce or eliminate Social Security.  But cuts to this program  would be devastating to families across the country. Americans aren’t getting rich off these monthly payments. In fact, most seniors rely on Social Security for survival.

With pensions and corporate retirement benefits disappearing from our workplace, it’s more important than ever that the Social Security program be strengthened. We must protect and expand Social Security benefits for millions of Americans and the future of our children.
