Teamsters Local 988, in Houston, TX, are readying themselves for a strike against Sysco, their employer. The workers deliver food and other products to schools, hospitals, and major restaurants. They have set a deadline for Jan. 17 for the strike, when their current contract expires, if a new, fair deal with Sysco cannot be reached. The Local is comprised of over 430 drivers, warehouse workers, and mechanics. Sysco abandoned negotiations, and is being charged with multiple violations of federal law. Robert Mele, President of the Local, said, “This is a multibillion-dollar corporation exploiting its workers. We’re ready to take a stand against Sysco’s blatant corporate greed.”
