California Teamsters have made a major inroad in their opposition to autonomous vehicles (AV) that weigh over 10,000 pounds. The California State Assembly has passed California Assembly Bill 316, which would require a trained human operator on autonomous vehicles of this size. The bill now heads to the State Senate. AV’s of this size are not yet on the road, but the California DMV is considering regulations that would allow it, without legislative consent. The Teamsters oppose such vehicles, not only because of guaranteed job loss, but because the record of crashes and deaths in AV vehicles of any size is already on the rise, and the risk of extreme danger in trucks of this size would only increase proportionately.
