Costco is the third largest retailer in the world. Their profits are almost shocking: $6.3 billion in 2023, net. And yet it continues to short-change its employees, bringing closer and closer the possibility that its 18,000 workers will be forced to strike after the current agreement expires in January 2025. The workers, represented by the powerful Teamsters, are up against the company’s refusal to accept approximately 98% of the union’s proposals, which include paid family leave, sick time, and safeguards against surveillance, among other multiple union asks. Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien said, “We are committed to good-faith negotiations, but this company [is] pushing us closer to a labor dispute every day.”
