Story Syndicate, a Brooklyn-based documentary production company, has been unionized. Organizers from the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) and Motion Picture Editors Guild (MPEG) worked together to achieve the workers’ goal. The employees will be represented by either union depending on their particular job. Most documentary production companies have historically been non-union, so this development is a major win. An important aspect of this success is that as TV streaming of documentaries has boomed, so has media companies’ profits, leading to the workers’ demands for the benefits a union will bring them.
