Starbucks has become notorious for its anti-union practices and illegal union-busting efforts. One tactic that Starbucks and other companies such as Trader Joe’s have used is to close stores when union organizing is taking place. As the number of Starbucks stores who have voted to unionize grows – 370 in the last two years according to the Associated Press – the pressure to respond to how the corporation deals with its employees’ demands for change is similarly under scrutiny. Now, the National Labor Relations Board has alleged that the coffee giant illegally closed 23 stores. The complaint filed on Dec. 15 seeks the re-opening of the stores and reimbursement of lost wages and other benefits.
