AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler has responded to the recent passage of the Social Security Fairness Act. The bipartisan bill, she said in a statement, rights a wrong of 40 years, which has “unfairly shortchange[d] public sector workers and their families.” This group includes teachers, firefighters, police officers, postal workers, and more. Currently, Social Security benefits are cut for millions of Americans, but President Biden’s signature will end two crucial contributors to these losses, the Windfall Elimination Provision, and the Government Pension Offset.
