The Teamsters have been opposed to self-driving trucks for years, even using examples of accidents among self-driving cars. The loss of jobs for the union members would be catastrophic; they number about 600,000 drivers. What the union wants is to require human drivers in the trucks to monitor the self-driving vehicles. But now, it seems, no one can slow down the advance of technology. A company named Aurora Innovation, and its competitors, expect to put thousands of these autonomous trucks on the road within only three or four years, and unlike human drivers, they will take no breaks, speed the flow of goods, make deliveries faster, and likely lower costs.
