On Tuesday, May 28, members of SEIU Local 32BJ rallied near City Hall in an effort to secure a contract with improved pensions. Their pensions have remained the same since 2018. The members of the union who were at the rally included school cleaners and handypersons. Their contract expires June 30, and covers over 5,000 school cleaners and handypersons who are employed in the city’s 1,800 public schools. The union has been bargaining for months with New York City School Support Services. Part of Local 32BJ’s strategy is to reallocate a larger portion of the prevailing wage supplemental benefits funds to the workers’ pensions, saying this will not cost the city any additional money.
