20 years ago, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) split from the AFL-CIO, which is made up of 60 affiliated unions. Now, the SEIU and the AFL-CIO have announced they are reuniting. The total number of members will now be 15 million. The reason for the shift? Workers, and top union officials, are readying for what they know will be anti-worker policies and actions under the incoming administration. While Biden had described himself as the most pro-labor President in history, unions can now expect changes described as “devastating” and “anti-worker.” 2 million SEIU members work in such jobs as hospitals, schools, and law enforcement, to name just a few, while AFL-CIO members have an extensive reach across the country, – General Motors, Disney, and the U.S. Postal Service, among many others.
