Instead of exercising its power to investigate and subpoena the NYPD, the City Council outsourced its responsibilities to an unelected and powerless bureaucrat. How on earth will an I.G. who can only make recommendations actually rebuild trust and improving policing? It can't. The solution lies in better police training, more community patrol, and elected leaders who take their oversight responsibilities seriously.
So while Council Members congratulate themselves, the hard work of making the city safer for everyone still lies ahead."
