By Eric Schneiderman, Attorney General
When someone’s locked up for committing a serious crime, we have to be certain we’ve gotten it right.
When the wrong person is convicted of a crime, the real perpetrator wins. He or she remains on the streets, free to continue hurting the victim, their family and their friends — all of us. We all lose.
That’s why it is absolutely essential we do everything possible to maximize the accuracy and reliability of our justice system. That’s why I’ve created the Conviction Review Bureau.
This first-of-its-kind initiative will work with District Attorneys throughout the state to investigate convictions that warrant further review. And it will review our office’s investigative procedures, so they are as just and reliable as possible.
I’m proud of what this bureau can mean for us — safety and fairness is what this is all about.
