Customers, Dollar store workers and a congressional candidate rallied outside the Morrison Avenue Dollar store in New Orleans where they expressed their righteous indignation over the recent closures of six Dollar General locations and a number of Family Dollars in New Orleans East. With their actions, the multi-billion dollar corporation has managed to wreak havoc on the surrounding community, as well as on its workers. The chain has targeted workers who have participated in rallies, asking for desperately needed improvements of their working conditions, by closing the stores and terminating them, leading to “food deserts,” where it is hard to get to the locations still in existence. Dollar General has a terrible record of safety violations, including blocked exits – which brings to mind the tragedy of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire – understaffed stores, and a terrifying record of in-store violence such as armed robbery and even deaths of workers.
