For years, people who serve the city, such as police officers, teachers, and members of the FDNY, have been saying it’s been harder and harder to live anywhere close to their jobs. Now, the city comptroller, Brad Lander, and an ex-director of policy for the Gov. and current state Assembly candidate Micah Lasher, have come together to try and remedy that. They have proposed a program called “Homes for City Workers.” The plan is that city pension funds would pay a portion of the purchase price of a home for qualified workers; when the house would be sold, the city would recoup a portion of the money. The two men say the program would help retain both city employees and middle-class New Yorkers, who have been leaving the city in droves as prices continue to skyrocket.
