The American Postal Workers Union is asking federal anti-trust regulators to stop the proposed merger of Office Depot and Staples, which Office Depot stockholders approved June 19. “The 200,000 members of the postal workers union like myself feel that consumers will be adversely affected,” Richard Shelley, a postal worker and spokesperson for the APWU, told the Business Journal.
The deal would leave the nation with just one major office-supplies retail chain; there were three before OfficeMax and Office Depot merged in 2013. The union has also opposed the Postal Service’s attempt to outsource services such as selling stamps and mailing packages to Staples, which is nonunion and pays close to minimum wage. Read more
