The Doctors Council-Service Employees International Union (SEIU) have made it known that a strike, beginning Jan. 13, could go ahead if their employer, NYC Health + Hospitals, does not meet their contract demands. There are almost 1,000 doctors in the union. The impact would be felt in a host of boroughs, and such a work stoppage would add to patient wait time, even in the ICU. The doctors have been fighting for a contract since Sept. 2023. They seek salary adjustments to address the rising costs of living, and cite long work hours, as well as widespread stress and burnout due to a lack of recruitment of qualified doctors, among other issues that a contract needs to address.
