Thousands of those who labor outside in the extreme heat in Phoenix, AZ will now be protected by a new ordinance passed by the Phoenix City Council. The rule requires that employers provide rest, shade, water and air conditioning. They must also be trained to recognize signs of heat stress. City contractors, their outdoor subcontractors, and construction and airport workers are all covered by the rule. Phoenix has seen its temperatures rise; last summer there was a streak of 30 days straight of temps over 110F. Hundreds have died from heat exposure.
