President Biden has announced that OSHA has proposed the nation’s first-ever federal safety standard regarding heat in the workplace. Recently, the Teamsters won heat safety protections for UPS workers as part of a record five-year contract. But they are far from the only workers who desperately need a similar change. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, representing 1.2 million members in grocery, meatpacking, food processing, retail and other essential workers, has weighed in on OSHA’s proposal. Said UFCW International President Marc Perrone, “Measures like water breaks, cool recovery spots, and rest will protect workers from heat-related illnesses, injuries, and deaths. A nationwide standard is essential to ensure safe working conditions in the ever-intensifying summer heat.”
