Tien alleged members of the Gambino crime family, along with their associates, were arrested, charged with trying to gain access to the city’s garbage carting and demolition industries. They were also charged with using violence and intimidation in their tactics. Their criminal activities go back to 2017, according to the indictment. They extorted owners of New York-based carting and demolition companies and tried to rig bids for demolition jobs. Crimes against unions included managing to secure low-and-no-show jobs, getting paid and receiving health care. One alleged Gambino soldier embezzled from union benefit plans by using non-union laborers from a non-union company to work for union companies that he operated, and not making required contributions called for in collective bargaining agreements.
