Atlantic Theater Company workers in Chelsea, Manhattan, are threatening to strike if they don’t reach a deal on a first contract. They unionized with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) last Feb. They are the first group of workers from a major off-Broadway theater to join that union, but this hasn’t phased theater management. The union’s international president, Matthew Loeb, said union busting lawyers are now in the mix. A rally was held by the union along with workers, the bargaining unit, and other union allies ahead of a bargaining session to put pressure on management. And the union has filed unfair labor practices with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Loeb told those at the rally, “There is no Atlantic Theater without you. We will not stop until there is a contract in place covering these people who deserve it.”
