Hundreds of New York City schools are already in violation of a new state law limiting class size, according to UFT President Michael Mulgrew. Academic class limits are now mandated to be no more than 20 students for kindergarten through third grade, 23 for grades four through eight, and 25 for high school. Mulgrew said that in nearly 700 ‘Title 1’ schools, or those with high levels of poverty, “50% or more of the classes are larger than allowed by the new state law.” “The city’s DOE needs to come up with a coherent plan to address the long-term inequity of crowded classrooms,” he added.
