It’s not only the writers and performers currently on strike whose livelihood is suffering, but New York City’s economy is taking a hit. As the WGA and SAG-AFTRA continue their “co-strike”, the effect of the work stoppage of those seeking fair contracts has had a ripple effect, throwing employees out of work in the Big Apple, both those directly involved in the industry or servicing film and TV productions. Now, industry stages, sound studios, production lots, filming and TV shows are dark. According to the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, in 2019 those in the industry accounted for some $81.6 billion in economic output, and represented nearly 4% of all city jobs.
