Major employers Starbucks, Cava, Burger King, and some others have been ruled to have violated a number of city labor laws, to the tune of $2.5 million in fines. Mayor Adams announced the decision on May 13. 3,000 workers will share in the award. The named companies were found by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to have not complied with the city’s Fair Workweek and paid sick leave laws. The companies must also pay over $230,000 in civil penalties. President of the RWDSU Stuart Appelbaum praised the decision, saying it did the right thing by workers for “holding these companies accountable under these laws.”
