Finally. We’ve all heard about massive, organized crime robbery going on in our drugstores, high fashion retailers, and other outlets. Some have reacted by closing the stores, overwhelmed by the crime rate. But one aspect of the violence is generally not spoken about: how it affects those who work at the stores, who live in fear every day. The Retail Worker Safety Act requires corporate retail employers to adopt a violence protection plan, which should be a pathway to protecting workers. Employees will be trained in de-escalation and active shooters and large employers must install panic buttons in the workplace. The bill now awaits passage in the New York Senate.
