The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) is fighting, yet again, for a crucial component of their members’ work lives: safe-staffing levels. Although, after nurses around the nation voiced the need for more nurses and told their stories about the impact of this shortage in hospitals, laws were enacted to combat those hospital practices, they have found that little has changed. Just one-third of hospitals have complied with a mandate to post staffing plans, and, even worse, did not staff ICUs with enough nurses 50% of the time, endangering patients’ lives. NYSNA President Nancy Hagans said, “New York needs a strong staffing law that works for nurses and patients and holds hospitals accountable.”
