National Nurses United (NNU) are raising their voices about the recent Supreme Court decision that has overturned a 1984 legal precedent. The decision was 6-3, with conservative justices now having a majority. The previous precedent was known as the “Chevron deference,” and gave regulatory agencies the power to define implementation of laws passed by Congress. Now, crucial agencies are in danger of being stripped of their abilities to protect workers. Nancy Hagans, President of NNU, said, “This ruling paves the way for corporate challenges to the actions of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the National Labor Relations Board, and other agencies with a duty to protect workers’ lives and rights, which would allow employers to get away with retaliation, union-busting, and maintaining dangerous workplace conditions.”
