It's been reported in the news that Con Ed is seeking to increase its gas and electric rates for New York residents.
While it's necessary for Con Edison to ensure that its infrastructure is made more resilient in the face of future severe weather events, it's unfair for them to pass these costs on to ratepayers.
As the City Council has said before, New Yorkers cannot – and should not – be asked to pay more just to receive consistent and uninterrupted service.
Many New Yorkers are still recovering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy. For a private company that New York City relies on for vital services to propose a rate increase now is a burden on city residents and an impediment to the recovery process.
Please join us in demanding that Con Ed provide a comprehensive plan for improving its infrastructure that doesn't include any rate increases. Sign the City Council's online petition at http://council.nyc.gov/
