Google slashed 12,000 jobs in 2023. Now, CEO Sundar Pichai has put out a memo to employees letting them know that more jobs will be on the chopping block in 2024. He didn’t get specific about why the cuts were coming beyond saying that they were about “removing layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in some areas.” Brrr. That’s coldspeak, with an Orwellian overlay that might have been written by AI. Layoffs of last year and reorganizations included Google’s hardware, ad sales, search, shopping teams, and many more.
