LaborPress has been documenting many of the shameful assaults on NYC transit workers over the years, and now comes the unwelcome news that the number of incidents has risen dramatically. In the first seven months of 2023, attacks on subway and bus workers rose a whopping 36%. This is the fourth year in a row that shows an increase. Celso Garcia, an MTA bus operator, said that although there have been recent state and city policies put in place in an effort to protect workers, they have had little impact. Richard Davis, president of the TWU Local 100, said that repeat offenders are a big part of the problem, and that “Elected officials, judges, prosecutors, and mental health officials must do much more.”
