Mayor’s Legacy – Closed Community Day Care Centers Throughout NYC

Since Mayor Michael Bloomberg was elected, his team has weakened the day care system which has been a model for every city in the USA. The day care centers were placed in neighborhoods during the 60’s to stabilize neighborhoods, provide education to children 2 through 5, and provide other important services to communities.

These early childhood educational programs evolved as very effective educational institution that prepared children for public school and allowed many single woman to work. These centers are unique with qualified licensed teachers and careful monitoring of services provided.

The Mayors EarlyLearn initiative is designed to destroy the unionized community day care structure first – and provide education second. There is no justification to close community based educational programs that have provided excellent services for many years. The City’s new EarlyLearn programs have no track record in these communities. In fact, many of the EarlyLearn educational private companies are not even based in New York City.
