Workers at the LGBTQ Center in Lower Manhattan have formed a union that has been recognized by the leadership at the Center, thereby avoiding the need for a formal union election. The Center is widely known for the help and support it has provided to the community since 1983. Health care, education, counseling, help for those with substance abuse and much more are just some of the offerings made available to queer and transgender people. The Center’s CEO, Carla Smith, said in an email that the Center was committed to a constructive collective bargaining process. The workers have unionized with Local 1180 of the CWA.
