There has been an ongoing battle between city retirees’ demand that their traditional Medicare and supplemental insurance be preserved, and Mayor Eric Adams’ administration’s continued push to shift them to another plan, Medicare Advantage. There are many differences between the two, the former being government-run, the latter being privately run and designed to make a profit. 250,000 former municipal workers have been trying to keep the right to Medicare, a much better plan, they maintain, and that was promised to them by the city years ago. Now, City Council Member Christopher Marte has introduced legislation attempting to block city officials from their continued push for these changes.
