NYPD police want to get out. An academic survey has found high rates of cops actively looking to leave, and multiple reasons for the planned exodus. The most cited reasons include dissatisfaction with work-life balance. Cops are required to work overtime as the amount of available police officers continues to plummet, leading to another problem cited in the survey: overwork. The inability to get time off contributes to this. If the survey’s findings are correct, the number of NYPD’s uniformed officers could fall to a record low. The authors of the survey, Kenneth M. Quick and Kevin T. Wolff, had thought that increased wages might arrest the current and potential loss of members of the NYPD, however, with their findings pointing the finger at work-life balance as the top reason for unhappiness at the job, it seems unlikely that would change the trajectory of the loss of New York’s finest.
