Transit workers have been harassed and assaulted by the hundreds over the years in New York. Reasons range from a rider enraged by a train running late to mental illness or just no reason at all. These essential workers have been cut, punched, spit on – which, during COVID, is potentially life-threatening – among many other methods of abuse. On June 3rd, a bus driver in Brooklyn told the B44 riders that the bus was going out of service and they needed to exit the bus. One person did not, and when the driver approached to see if he needed help, the transit worker was punched multiple times and doused with lighter fluid.
