Immigrant Worker's Rights Awareness Weekend
May 11, 2011
Assemblyman, Rory Lancman,
Chair of the Subcommittee on Workplace Safety
This week marks the first annual “New York State Immigrant Workers’ Rights Awareness Weekend” sponsored by the Assembly Subcommittee on Workplace Safety, in conjunction with the New York State Department of Labor, Bureau of Immigrant Workers’ Rights (DoL).
The goal of the weekend is to educate immigrants about their rights on the job: a safe workplace, fair wages and to be free from discrimination. The event spans seventeen locations across the state with over one hundred government, not for profit and community based organizations participating to educate immigrants of their rights as workers.
According to a 2007 report by the Brennan Center for Justice, “While undocumented immigrants and recent arrivals are at greatest risk of being subject to workplace violations, a significant percentage of legal immigrants and second generation immigrants also experience violations.” This shows the importance for everyone, especially immigrants, to understand their rights at work.
We encourage workers throughout the state to visit the locations listed below this weekend to learn about their rights on the job.
