Reporting unsafe workplaces, wage violations, and illegal working conditions often create fear among immigrant workers, some of whom are working “under the table”. Over two dozen state and local government agencies have now come together in an effort to protect those workers and their testimonies, and have turned to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for help in rectifying this problem. There is currently a program, the Deferred Action for Labor Enforcement, which protects against deportation for two years to those immigrant workers who cooperate in a labor investigation. These agencies are asking for this time period to be extended, so that investigations will not be cut short when workers are forced to leave the country.
