Andy Byford, who at one point oversaw the NYC subways, a daunting task for anyone, is now the senior vice-president of high-speed rail at Amtrak. He is championing and advocating for the new way of traveling, saying that although the U.S. is currently “the outlier when it comes to high-speed rail,” he believes the day is coming when this form of transportation will create a “golden opportunity” once people give it a chance. Six high-speed rail projects are in process or are being constructed, while traffic and climate change push the population towards a change. Although there are still many obstacles to overcome, this mode of travel is successful in many other countries.
