Gwen Mills, the recently elected President of UNITE HERE, is now the first woman ever to lead the union. Mills has long-term experience: among many other achievements, she has been a community organizer and labor leader, working on transforming communities. UNITE HERE has a membership of almost 275,000 hospitality workers across the U.S. and Canada. “We don’t shy away from taking on powerful corporate interests, and we don’t back down from a fight. Now is the time to do even more to support workers who want a union,” said Mills. She has a bold vision for the future, which includes taking on corporate power through union growth, increasing political organizing, and working on climate change and technology. She also wants to focus on the 14 million nonunion workers in the service industry, and lead them to unionization.
