Following a gruesome attack on a subway conductor earlier this year, and others which did not receive the same amount of media attention, a woman has shed some positive light on the transit workers. A professional photographer, Sirui Ma, descended into broiling heat in June of 2023 to capture the faces of conductors on their routes, with their consent. Now, her book “Subway Portraits” a 208-page coffee table book is out, and Ma explicated what motivated her journey and the photos she took. “[It’s about] being able to appreciate the people who keep the city moving,” she said. From Bed-Stuy to Queens to Manhattan, Ma, in her work, has celebrated those who do just that.
