Mayor Eric Adams is patting himself on the back for new city rules that will give NYC food delivery app workers decent wages, but by doing so has drawn the ire of AFSCME Local 2507 President Oren Barzilay, who represents EMS crews. Although in the coming weeks the app workers will receive a huge hike, by April 2025 they will be mandated to make $19.96/hr – over one dollar more per hour than Local 2507 starting members receive. Barzilay questioned the message this sends out to his members, who do a difficult and oftentimes dangerous job. He queried where the city’s values lay, positing that the “speedy delivery of bagels, fast food and pizza” has become more important than fairly compensating the medical professionals who save the lives of New Yorkers.
